Beside my steps, a squirrel is dying. A slow death, I fear will last for days. The flies hover and I keep watch from the chair on my porch. I decide that I cannot spare him dignity and descend the steps with my keys jangling. He hobbles down the split stone and I follow him, a soft tambourine march to the end.

I go inside then and try to shake the guilt of not wanting to see. Of not wanting to remember the other deaths I have bore witness to. An hour passes. I go again to the porch and look over the rail. The squirrel is back. The flies hover. I cannot escape it this time.

Award-winning photographer Camille Seaman, best known for her earlier work depicting massive polar icebergs, recently turned her lens on another incredible natural phenomenon - storm clouds above the American Midwest. She partnered with experienced storm chasers and began to stalk a particular type of storm cloud - the supercell. On June 22, 2012, in western Nebraska, she encountered an enormous supercell and captured its many faces.

I may or may not have missed the last prompt for ARTicipate but I’m on it this week with the word Green. Aside from obvious color involved, this project has at least inspired me to take on new mediums for my creativity. Materials so far include magazine clippings (including the main photo in the background), watercolor and eventually there will be some shading with pencil. I would say this is maybe a quarter of the way finished, but I’ll be sure to post pictures once I’m finished. If you haven’t joined ARTicipate, there’s still 6 more weeks left!

You like bands that other people like, but you only like their really obscure stuff. When you describe a piece of art or something as “difficult,” you mean it as a compliment. You probably have a graduate degree in something specific or you just work at a used book store. You want to move to Portland but you just haven’t done it yet. Sometimes people call you an asshole and you respond, “All I’m saying is that it’s important to understand what the term ‘craft beer’actually means.” If you’re a straight guy (and you probably are) you have a girlfriend named Cara who is a research assistant and wants to move to France, but not Paris. When you have a kid (not with Cara), it will have, for a first name, the last name of a writer you like. (Maybe Wallace, because you love Infinite Jest.) One summer when you were a kid you spent a month with your cousins at their island house in Maine and something big happened that you never told anyone else.
